Mrs White and Mrs Baxter would like to welcome you to the Year 5 homepage. As class teachers, we are supported in the delivery of the curriculum by Mrs Mason, Miss Freeman, Mrs Smith and Mrs Powell.

Take a look at our Curriculum Coverage

and peek into some of the activities that children do in Year 5

A Helping Hand

Our termly Pop Ins are a way to find out about what is going on in the term. If you couldn't make the last Pop In then a PowerPoint can be viewed via this link.

Homework and Useful Links

Every week, the children will be set two pieces of homework. They are normally Numeracy and Literacy but sometimes they can be topic based. They are set on a Friday and due in on the following Wednesday and all children are encouraged to meet the deadline.

A list of spellings to learn are handed out each Monday and a test takes place the following week. The children are expected to stick their spellings into their homework diary and learn them over the week. If the children are learning a particular spelling pattern please encourage them to find other examples of words which contain the specific letters.

What we are looking at in Term 1

In Literacy, we are looking at 'Baboon on the Moon'. The children will be looking at how the camera angles can give us clues on the way the story is unfolding. For example, if the camera is close up, it means they want to focus on the emotional part of the character. We are also looking at how we can widen the vocabulary which will help with planning and writing stories and other creative writing.

In History, we are looking at Anglo Saxons, focusing on where they came from, why they came to Britain and what life was like for an Anglo Saxon.

Our Space topic is one that is loved by both children and teachers. Although we look at some very complicated theories, it is a fun and enjoyable topic where children can discover how shadows are formed, why we have day and night and the distances between Earth, Sun and Moon.

In PE, we are learning the rules and skills for Tag Rugby.

Dont forget your kit! If you can't remember your PE day, it should be in your diary.

Music is linked to our Science topic, where we look at music composed by Gustav Holst

Again, linking to the space topic. Using music from Gustav Holst, the children replicate a space launch through the media of dance.
